French antique pedestal cake stand

A graceful French antique pedestal cake stand -- known in French as a piedouche -- in cream-ground faience decorated with blue and white transferware. The bowl-shaped dish sits atop a slender, flared column with a scalloped circular foot, a form widely produced by French earthenware manufacturers throughout the nineteenth century for formal bourgeois tables. The maker's stamp, partially legible on the underside base, reads within a floral cartouche, consistent with French faience production of that era.

The decoration is lively and well-printed: scattered floral bouquets -- roses, campanula and mixed garden blooms -- are arranged across the interior, framed by a neat dentil border along the rim and acanthus scrollwork at the two pierced side handles. Those open handles, a classic feature of French serving ware of this period, add lightness and a faintly rococo charm. The overall palette of cool slate blue against the warm off-white ground reads as quietly graphic, equally at home on a kitchen shelf, a dining table centrepiece or a collected display of blue and white ceramics.

Condition and patina consistent with age. The glaze shows light overall crazing and some brown toning to the interior ground, both natural to faience of this age and clearly visible in the photos.

Approx. 14 in wide x 11 in long x 7 in high (35.5 x 28.5 x 18 cm).
