French Antique Bottle Carrier
A French antique bottle carrier in riveted flat iron, built to transport four wine or litre bottles at once -- the kind of practical object that lived in French farmhouse cellars and bistro kitchens from the late nineteenth century well into the early twentieth. Known in France as a porte-bouteilles, this four-slot carrier is formed from flat iron straps bent into circles at two heights, framed by a sturdy outer band, and topped with a U-shaped iron bail fitted with a turned wooden handle.
The construction is entirely hand-assembled: each joint is riveted rather than welded, a detail that speaks to early workshop craft. The iron has developed a deep, even charcoal patina with the texture that only genuine age produces, and the wooden handle has mellowed to a warm brown with visible grain and honest wear from years of use. Displayed on an open kitchen shelf, a dining sideboard or used as a wine-bottle caddy at the table, this French antique bottle carrier brings an unpretentious, graphic quality to any farmhouse or collected interior.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Light surface oxidation on the iron throughout; the wooden handle shows some surface cracking and minor checking at the top face, visible in the close-up photo.
Approx. 8.5 in wide x 8.7 in deep x 15.4 in tall (21.5 x 22 x 39 cm).
