French Antique Glazed Terracotta Jar

A handsome French antique glazed terracotta jar -- known in French as a pot de gres or pot de conserve -- wheel-thrown from a coarse buff clay and covered in a vivid iron-red glaze that speaks to the provincial pottery traditions of rural France. Pieces of this form, squat and balloon-bellied with a slightly constricted collar, were produced in farmhouse pottery workshops across southern and central France from the eighteenth century onward, used to store preserves, lard, herbs and grains in the cool of a stone larder.

The glaze is a warm, deep red-orange -- closer to fired iron than anything else -- applied with confident generosity so that it pools and drips at the collar in a ribbon of natural cream, a detail that reads as purely decorative today but is simply the honest result of hand-dipping. The interior is left unglazed in the traditional manner, showing the pale sandy clay and the concentric ridges left by the potter's hands. On the shelf, grouped with other antique French earthenware or standing alone against whitewashed plaster, this little jar has exactly the quiet, grounded presence that collectors of French country and farmhouse ceramics look for.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light glaze loss and wear along the rim, visible in the photos, and some age spotting to the unglazed interior and foot -- all entirely in keeping with a piece of this period and use.

Approx. 4 in wide x 4 in high (10.5 x 10.5 cm).
