French antique glazed pottery jar
A compact French antique glazed pottery jar of the kind produced in modest regional workshops throughout the 19th century, wheel-thrown in a pale buff stoneware clay and glazed only on the upper half -- a practical economy of the trade that gives these pots their characteristic two-tone silhouette. The deep iron-red glaze, shiny and slightly pooled where it meets the raw body, was the workhorse finish of French country potteries, applied to preserve and seal the interior while leaving the lower body bare. A narrow dark band marks the glaze boundary, adding a graphic quality that feels very much at home in a modern French farmhouse kitchen.
The form is rounded and well balanced, widening at the shoulder before narrowing to a small flat foot ring and a generous open mouth with a flat amber-glazed rim. Inside, the same warm amber glaze coats the walls smoothly. Jars of this type -- known in France simply as pots de conservation or pots de menage -- were used to store fats, preserves or salt, and today they sit just as naturally on an open kitchen shelf, a windowsill or a styled vignette alongside linens and cutting boards. The unglazed stoneware base, visible in the bottom detail photo, shows the raw pale clay and the turning marks left by the potter's hand.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Small glaze losses are visible along the rim, and light surface wear marks are present on the unglazed lower body, all in keeping with honest long use.
Approx. 4 in wide x 4.1 in high (10 x 10.5 cm).
