French antique confit pot

A French antique confit pot in hand-thrown terracotta, covered in a warm amber glaze that shifts from deep ochre on the body to a pale yellow-green on the interior and rim. Pieces of this type -- known in French as pots a graisse or pots a confit -- were made in quantity across rural France from the eighteenth century onward, used in farmhouse kitchens to preserve duck, goose or pork under a layer of fat. The rounded, squat form with its gently flared lip is typical of southern French country earthenware production.

The exterior glaze catches the light with a quiet richness, pooling darker in places and lifting to a brighter amber where the clay body curves outward. Inside, the pale glaze shows the natural swirl marks left by the potter's hand, a clear sign of individual, wheel-thrown construction. Dark manganese spots punctuate the surface -- a characteristic of traditional lead glazing rather than any defect -- giving the pot the kind of lived-in character that looks at home on a kitchen shelf, a mantel or grouped with other antique French ceramics.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light glaze losses and darkening along the rim, and some encrusted deposits at the unglazed foot ring, all in keeping with a piece that saw genuine use.

Approx. 4.75 in wide x 4.75 in high (12 x 12 cm).
