French Antique Bread Board
A well-used French antique bread board of the type found in farmhouse and rural kitchens across France from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This French antique bread board was a working tool, made to serve daily bread-cutting needs, and its heavily marked surface is a direct record of that use. The distinctive double-lobed top edge with a central upright handle is a classic French country form, commonly associated with bread and charcuterie boards of this period.
The board is cut from a single thick plank of hardwood, most likely beech or walnut based on the visible grain pattern and warm brown tone. The surface carries extensive knife marks and scoring accumulated over decades of use, distributed evenly across the face. The handle is tapered and rectangular in section, pierced with a small hanging hole near the top. The edges of the upper lobes show rounding and wear consistent with age and regular handling. No cracks, splits or repairs are visible. The wood has dried and lightened over time but retains its structural solidity.
Dimensions as listed: 26cm x 42cm x 2.5cm (10.2" x 16.5" x 1"). These measurements refer to the main board body; the handle adds further height above the upper lobes. The board is substantial in hand and sits flat without warping.
A piece of this scale works well displayed upright on a kitchen shelf, sideboard or counter, and has become a sought-after decorative element in French country, rustic and farmhouse interior schemes. It is also fully functional for use as a serving board for cheese, bread or charcuterie.
