French Antique Bread Board
A well-worn French antique bread board in solid wood, this piece carries the visible marks of decades of daily kitchen use. French antique bread boards of this type were standard equipment in rural and provincial households, used for slicing bread, preparing charcuterie, and serving at the table. The format and construction are consistent with French country kitchen objects from the late 19th to early 20th century.
The board is cut from a single plank of hardwood, most likely beech or sycamore, with a distinctly textured surface showing a dense network of knife marks accumulated over many years of use. The handle is narrower than the body and features a small hanging hole drilled through it. The top edge of the board has a gently curved, wave-like profile on either side of the handle, a detail common to French provincial bread boards of this era. Dark staining is visible in the lower section and scattered across the surface, consistent with age and use. The wood has dried and lightened considerably, giving it an uneven pale honey tone with darker patches. No maker's mark or stamp is visible in any of the photos.
Dimensions as stated by the seller: 24.5cm x 40.5cm x 2.5cm / 9.6" x 15.9" x 1". These measurements refer to the body of the board excluding the handle, which adds several additional centimeters to the overall height. The board is substantial in hand, with a thickness of 2.5cm / 1" providing good solidity.
With its worn surface and classic form, this board works well as a decorative kitchen display piece, a charcuterie or cheese serving board, or as part of a collection of French country antiques. The wine bottle in the photos is included for scale reference only and is not part of the sale.
