French antique soup tureen blue white
A classic French antique soup tureen in blue white transferware, a soupiere, the lidded vessel that sat at the center of every proper French family table from the mid-nineteenth century onward. Crafted from cream-glazed faience earthenware, it carries the warm ivory tone and confident weight typical of French provincial pottery from that era. The overall form is round and generously proportioned, set on a footed base with scroll handles on either side and a flat mushroom knop on the domed lid.
The blue white transferware decoration is crisp and layered: central floral medallions framed by a fine lattice ground alternate with acanthus scrollwork, while a delicate garland of small blossoms and leaves runs along the lid and the shoulder of the body. A finely detailed border of repeating geometric motifs edges both the lid and the base rim. The overall effect is graphic and quietly elegant, very much at home on a French country dresser, a farmhouse kitchen shelf, or as a planter or centerpiece on a dining table.
Condition and patina consistent with age. One handle has a chip at its tip with some exposed clay visible, and light surface wear is present throughout, adding honest character to the piece.
Approx. 9.4 in wide x 5.1 in high (24 x 13 cm).
