Antique Ridgways Compote Stand

Made by Ridgways of England, this antique Ridgways compote stand dates to the late Victorian or Edwardian period and carries the printed backstamp "Laurier" -- named after the French word for laurel, the botanical motif that defines the entire decor. The mark reads "Ridgways England Royal Semi Porcelain," a designation used by the Staffordshire manufacturer from the 1880s onward, placing this piece firmly in the late 19th to early 20th century.

The body is white semi-porcelain with a scalloped, wavy rim on both the plate and the pedestal base. The border decoration consists of two interlaced green laurel garland chains running in a continuous loop around the rim, rendered in underglaze green transfer print with fine detail on each individual leaf. A secondary finer gold-toned printed line outlines the scalloped edge. The same laurel motif wraps around the pedestal column and the flared foot. The glaze shows age-appropriate crazing and light staining consistent with genuine antique use, visible particularly on the unglazed rim of the foot ring.

The compote measures approximately 22.5cm diameter x 7cm height / 8.9" x 2.8". The plate surface is wide and flat, well suited to displaying pastries or fruit, and the pedestal base is solid and stable.

This antique Ridgways compote stand is a collectible piece for those interested in English transferware or Victorian tableware. The Laurier pattern is a recognized Ridgways design and pairs well with other green-and-white transferware from the same era.
