French Antique Bread Board
A French antique bread board of the kind found in provincial farmhouse kitchens from the late 19th to early 20th century. This French antique bread board was a working tool, used daily for slicing and serving bread at the table or counter, and its form reflects straightforward rural craftsmanship with no decorative pretension.
The board is cut from a single thick plank of hardwood, most likely beech, which was the standard material for French kitchen boards of this period. The top edge is shaped into two rounded lobes flanking a central rectangular handle, giving the board its distinctive silhouette. The handle is drilled with a hanging hole, darkened with age and showing minor cracking around the aperture consistent with long use. The surface carries extensive knife marks and patina across both faces, with darker staining toward the center where use was heaviest. The back face shows deeper, more uneven coloration, suggesting the board was used on both sides over many decades. No maker's mark or stamp is visible. The thickness of 3cm gives the board a solid, substantial feel in the hand.
Dimensions are 42.5cm x 26.5cm x 3cm / 16.7" x 10.4" x 1.2". The wine bottle included in the seller's photos provides a clear sense of scale, confirming the board is generously proportioned for a domestic bread board of this type.
Worn boards of this format are collected for display in kitchen interiors, used as serving boards for cheese and charcuterie, or hung on a wall as a piece of utilitarian folk craft. The two-lobe profile is a recognizable form among collectors of French provincial kitchenalia.
