French Antique Bread Board
A French antique bread board of generous proportions, hand-cut from a single plank of hardwood and worn smooth by generations of daily kitchen use. This French antique bread board displays the classic silhouette found in rural French farmhouse kitchens: a rectangular cutting surface topped with a distinctive double-arch cutout flanking a rectangular hanging handle, pierced with a hole through which a twisted twine loop is threaded for wall storage. Two additional nail holes are visible at the base of the handle section, evidence of earlier hanging hardware.
The surface is heavily patinated, with a warm mid-brown tone developed through decades of use. Knife marks and scoring lines cover both faces of the board uniformly, confirming it saw consistent working use rather than purely decorative display. The wood grain is clearly visible across the surface, and the edges retain their original hand-worked profile with slight rounding from age. The underside shows comparable wear and patination to the front face. No cracks, splits or structural repairs are visible. The handle section is cut from the same plank as the board body, not a separate piece, indicating solid traditional construction typical of 19th- to early 20th-century French provincial craftsmanship.
Dimensions as provided: 43.5cm x 29cm x 2.7cm, which converts to approximately 17.1" x 11.4" x 1.1". This is a notably large format for a domestic bread board, as confirmed by comparison with the standard wine bottle shown in the reference photographs.
A working antique of this scale suits display on a kitchen wall, use as a serving board for cheese or charcuterie, or as a decorative prop in a farmhouse or rustic interior setting. Its worn surface and aged patina give it immediate visual presence without any restoration work required.
