Antique French Wire Dish Rack 2-Tier Egouttoir Kitchen Organizer 20102625

French Wire Dish Rack

A French wire dish rack of the kind once found in nearly every provincial kitchen, known in France as an egouttoir, this two-tier piece is built from black-painted iron wire formed into a sturdy, practical structure with a frankly handsome decorative sensibility. The upper basket sits beneath a crested arch of scrolled wirework -- an elegant flourish that lifts what could have been purely utilitarian into something genuinely worth displaying. The lower tier is fitted with upright wire dividers for plates, above a close-mesh basket tray edged with a looped coil border that repeats on the upper shelf as well. Early twentieth-century French kitchens relied on these open-wire racks to air-dry dishes on the drainboard; today they translate just as naturally into a farmhouse kitchen for storing plates, letters, magazines or rolled linens.

The piece has good visual weight and a graphic quality that comes from the contrast between the fine mesh panels, the heavier structural rods and the decorative scrollwork at the crown. The blackened finish has deepened to a warm dark grey with use and age, giving the whole piece a patina that no reproduction quite achieves. The divided upper basket, visible clearly from above, is a practical detail that speaks to careful, considered making. It would sit well on an open kitchen shelf, a mudroom counter or a desk, and it photographs beautifully in a styled vignette.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light surface rust and white mineral deposits are visible along the lower basket edges and looped border, consistent with years of service near water; the wire structure is sound and stable throughout.
