French Terracotta Tian Bowl
A French terracotta tian bowl in hand-thrown earthenware, glazed on the interior and along the rim in a warm amber tone that deepens toward ochre at the edges. The tian -- a wide, shallow clay vessel used throughout Provence and the broader south of France for baking gratins, storing olives or simply presenting fruit at the table -- has been a fixture of French country kitchens for centuries, made by local potters from the same iron-rich red clay that colours the Provencal landscape.
The form here is classic: a gently flared profile with a flat, slightly raised rim that catches the glaze in a glossy band, contrasting with the raw, unglazed exterior in dark fired earth tones. The interior shows the natural crazing and amber variation of an old lead-or-tin-based glaze applied by hand, giving the surface a depth and warmth that no modern reproduction can easily replicate. A piece like this sits naturally on an open kitchen shelf, holds bread or seasonal produce on a farmhouse table, or anchors a collection of French country ceramics.
Condition and patina consistent with age. There are several small glaze losses on the interior floor and light darkening to the unglazed exterior, all in keeping with long, honest use.
Approx. 10.0 in diameter x 3.7 in high (25.5 x 9.5 cm).
