French Terracotta Tian Bowl

A classic French terracotta tian bowl, hand-thrown in earthenware and glazed on the interior with a deep, warm red slip glaze that is left unglazed on the exterior walls and foot. The tian -- a wide, shallow bowl used for generations in French country kitchens for mixing, marinating and gratin cooking -- is one of the most honest and functional forms in the French ceramic tradition, particularly associated with Provence and the Languedoc. The raw, sandy-pink exterior contrasts beautifully with the richly colored glazed interior, a combination that speaks directly to the farmhouse origins of the form.

The scalloped rim, formed by hand rather than cut by machine, gives the bowl its quietly lively silhouette. The interior glaze catches the light with a depth that comes only from age and use -- matte in some areas, still glossy in others, the surface telling the story of a long working life in a French kitchen. Today it works equally well as a fruit bowl on a kitchen counter, a display piece on a shelf, or a serving vessel at the table. The unglazed base shows the full character of the local terracotta clay, sandy and warm in tone.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light glaze loss visible on the rim and interior shoulder, and natural crazing throughout the glazed surface -- all expected and appropriate for a piece of this age and type.

Approx. 10.4 in diameter x 3.9 in deep (26.5 cm x 10 cm).
