French Terracotta Tian Bowl

A classic French terracotta tian bowl in hand-formed earthenware, glazed on the interior in a warm russet tone that deepens to amber along the double-ridged rim. The tian -- a low, wide bowl used across Provence for everything from mixing dough to baking gratins -- was a staple of the French country kitchen for centuries, and pieces like this one survive in brocante markets as some of the most honest and appealing objects of rural French domestic life.

The exterior remains unglazed, showing the coarse, mineral-rich clay body with its natural brick-red colour and scattered white inclusions, evidence of local earthenware traditions. The interior glaze is applied generously, pooling slightly toward the base and dripping in places over the rim in the casual way of hand-finished rustic pottery. Two raised ridges encircle the rim, a practical detail that also gives the piece a quiet graphic quality. Small ear-like lug handles sit opposite each other, characteristic of the Provencal form. Today it works as a fruit bowl, a bread basket, a centrepiece on a farmhouse table, or a display piece on a kitchen shelf.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light surface wear on the exterior and some glaze drips on the outer rim, both entirely in keeping with the rustic character of the piece.

Approx. 9.3 in wide x 3.7 in high (23.7 x 9.5 cm).
