Antique French Terracotta Bowl Red Glaze Rustic Pottery 26102612

antique French terracotta bowl

A sturdy antique French terracotta bowl, hand-formed from red earthenware clay and glazed on the interior with a deep, warm burgundy finish. This type of low-sided glazed bowl -- known in French country kitchens as a jatte or tian -- served generations of cooks for mixing, marinating and storing. The unglazed exterior retains the honest, sandy texture of the raw clay, while the thick rolled rim bears the small irregularities that come only from hand-working at the wheel or by hand-building, pointing to a rural pottery tradition probably dating to the early twentieth century.

The interior glaze is a rich, amber-tinged red that deepens toward the rim where it pools and drips slightly -- a hallmark of artisan lead-free or early lead glazes fired in wood kilns across southern France. The base carries a faint impressed mark, partially legible, consistent with a small regional workshop. Four small applied lugs or tabs around the rim are a practical detail seen on French kitchen pottery of this period, used to rest the bowl on a cloth or stone surface. Today it works beautifully as a fruit bowl, a bread basket or a decorative centrepiece on a farmhouse table, and is equally at home on an open kitchen shelf or a rustic dresser.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light wear and minor glaze losses along the rolled rim, and some darkening from use visible in the base of the interior -- all adding to the lived-in character of the piece.
