French stoneware pitcher
A French stoneware pitcher of the type known in France as a pichet, wheel-thrown from a buff-coloured clay body and fired to a warm, even brown. Utilitarian farmhouse pottery of this form was produced across rural France through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for everyday table and dairy use. The form, glaze colour and construction are consistent with a piece dating to the late 1800s or early 1900s.
The pitcher has a classic bulbous body that narrows at the shoulder before opening to a wide mouth with a pinched spout. A thick loop handle is applied to the upper body. The exterior carries a brown glaze that shifts from a slightly deeper tone at the shoulder to a more matte, earth-toned finish toward the base, a variation typical of kiln conditions rather than a defect. The interior is unglazed, showing the pale buff stoneware body. The flat foot is fully unglazed, revealing the gritty, sand-dusted clay and what appears to be a hand-incised mark or kiln number partially visible at the rim of the base. No maker's stamp or printed mark is present.
Condition is consistent with age and former domestic use. The surface shows scattered light scratches and minor scuffing across the body. There is a small surface nick at the upper lip near the spout, visible in photo 1. No hairline cracks, chips to the handle, or repairs are detected. The glaze shows normal crazing consistent with the age of the piece. All parts are original. Sold as pictured.
24 cm in height. This is a generous-sized pitcher suited to display on a shelf, dresser or kitchen counter. It is sold strictly as a decorative collectible and has not been tested for food or liquid safety.
