antique French stoneware pitcher
A well-proportioned antique French stoneware pitcher -- a pichet in the French tradition -- with a generously rounded belly, a confident loop handle and a gently flared lip shaped into a clean pouring spout. Wheel-thrown stoneware of this character was produced in rural French potteries throughout the nineteenth century, destined for farmhouse tables and dairies across the country, and this example carries all the warmth and solidity of that tradition.
The exterior is covered in a salt-influenced amber-brown glaze, speckled throughout with dark iron flecks fired into the surface -- a natural result of the high-temperature kiln process rather than any applied decoration. The interior is glazed in a soft grey-white, smooth and clean, as visible looking down into the wide open mouth. The form is sturdy and well balanced, with a satisfying weight and a silhouette that reads beautifully on a kitchen shelf, a farmhouse table or a mantelpiece. The throwing rings visible on the interior base confirm hand production.
Condition and patina consistent with age. A small hairline firing crack is visible near the rim, likely occurring during the original firing rather than from use or impact; the glaze is otherwise intact and the piece stands firmly.
Approx. 9.4 in tall (24 cm).
