French Stoneware Mixing Bowl
A sturdy French stoneware mixing bowl of the kind that once sat at the heart of country kitchen work across rural France. Thrown in a dense, naturally speckled grey clay body, this piece belongs to a long tradition of utilitarian French stoneware -- known in France as grès -- produced in regional potteries to supply farm households with durable, everyday vessels. The conical form, wide flat rim and twin pinched spouts are all hallmarks of the classic French jatte à verser, the workhorse pouring bowl that appeared on kitchen tables from Normandy to the Auvergne.
The interior carries a smooth grey-green glaze that has mellowed to a soft, almost celadon tone, while the exterior clay body is left unglazed, its natural warmth punctuated by iron flecks fired into the stone. The wide horizontal rim gives the bowl a handsome, well-balanced profile that reads beautifully on a kitchen shelf or a farmhouse table. Today it works equally well as a bread-rising bowl, a generous fruit or salad bowl, or simply as a sculptural object in a collected kitchen or a linen-and-pottery vignette.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Some light surface darkening and mineral staining on the exterior, and a small scatter of iron spots visible on the interior glaze -- all honest evidence of a long working life.
Approx. 13.8 in wide x 6.7 in tall (35 x 17 cm).
