Antique French Stoneware Crock

A large antique French stoneware crock of the type produced in substantial numbers across French rural potteries during the 19th century. This antique French stoneware crock served as a utilitarian storage vessel in farmhouse kitchens, used to preserve rendered animal fat, grease, or other pantry staples. Its generous capacity made it a practical workhorse of the traditional French kitchen.

The crock is thrown in a coarse stoneware body and covered with a lead-free ochre glaze that has developed an aged patina over decades of use. The glaze presents in a warm amber-ochre tone with a slightly uneven surface characteristic of hand-production. Two small loop handles are applied symmetrically at mid-body, just below a pronounced double-ridge collar that runs around the upper shoulder. The interior shows the concentric throwing rings typical of wheel-thrown stoneware. Scattered dark speckling and crazing throughout the glaze, along with chips and surface wear consistent with authentic age and heavy use, are visible across the body. No maker's mark or stamp is visible in the photos.

The seller states dimensions of 21cm x 21cm, which converts to approximately 8.3" x 8.3" (height x diameter). This is a large-format piece — the wide opening and deep body give it substantial volume suited to serious food storage. The unglazed foot ring shows raw stoneware clay.
