Antique French Stone Cannonballs
A set of three antique French stone cannonballs, each hand-shaped from dense natural stone and carrying the unmistakable weight of French history. Objects of this kind -- heavy spheres ground or cast from local stone -- were produced across France for centuries, from medieval fortifications through to the early modern period, and their forms have survived in barns, chateau gardens and estate collections ever since.
Each ball presents a beautifully weathered surface of warm brown and taupe tones, with fine surface crazing and shallow pitting that speak to long years of exposure. No two are identical: slight variations in tone and texture give the group a natural, collected quality that works equally well grouped on a mantelpiece, arranged in a low bowl or nestled among books on a shelf. One ball shows a broad band of darker mineral staining on one side, adding graphic contrast to the trio. Their rounded forms and earthy palette make them a natural fit for a French farmhouse interior or a study layered with antique finds.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Surface crazing, minor pitting and one area of dark mineral staining visible; all characteristics of genuinely aged stone.
Each ball measures approximately 3.5 to 4.3 in in diameter (9 to 11 cm).
