antique French Sarreguemines stoneware crock
Stamped on the base with the shield mark and the words "Opaque de Sarreguemines," this antique French Sarreguemines stoneware crock is a compact, cylindrical pot with a gently flared rolled rim -- the kind of unpretentious vessel that kept French pantries running for generations. Sarreguemines, a faience and stoneware manufactory established in Lorraine in the late 18th century, produced utilitarian wares of this type in large numbers throughout the 19th century; pieces bearing the "Opaque" designation were among their workhorse kitchen lines, valued for durability rather than ornament.
The glaze is a warm, muted beige-sand overall, interrupted mid-body by a band of loosely applied blue-grey that bleeds and crackles in a way that feels entirely accidental and entirely pleasing. Age has softened the surface into a dusty, chalky finish on the lower body while the upper section retains a quiet sheen. Inside, the glaze has settled into a pale, smoky lavender-grey. A fine craze network runs across the interior -- the natural result of decades of use and contraction. On a kitchen shelf, a potting bench or a tablescape, the pot holds its own with quiet confidence alongside linen, ironstone and aged wood.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Light crazing throughout the glaze, most visible on the interior and base; some natural darkening and surface marks on the exterior glaze band.
