Luneville French Faience Oval Dish

Produced by the Luneville faience manufactory in Lorraine, France, this antique Luneville French faience oval dish carries the classic blue and white transfer-print decoration associated with the factory's late 19th to early 20th century production. Luneville, established in 1731, was one of the most active French ceramic manufacturers, widely distributed across Europe and exported internationally.

The dish features a crisp blue transfer-print border running the full perimeter of the rim, composed of scrolling acanthus leaves, rocaille cartouches, shell motifs and trailing floral sprigs. The decoration is applied in a single cobalt-toned blue against a cream-white earthenware ground. The interior well is plain, showing light use marks and surface crazing consistent with age. The underside carries the Luneville factory stamp in blue underglaze, clearly legible as "Luneville" beneath a crowned eagle device, confirming the French origin and manufacturer. One end of the dish shows a slight pointed profile, giving the oval a subtly asymmetric form typical of fish or serving platters of this period.

The dish measures 24cm x 13cm x 3.3cm, equivalent to approximately 9.4" x 5.1" x 1.3". The shallow depth and elongated oval form indicate use as a serving piece, suitable for fish, asparagus or cold cuts. Condition is consistent with age and use: surface crazing visible throughout the glaze, light knife marks on the well, and minor wear to the transfer border, but no chips or cracks observed.
