French Jam Pot
Dating from approximately 1900, this French jam pot represents traditional stoneware pottery crafted for preserving jams, conserves, and seasonal fruit preparations in rural French households. The vessel exemplifies centuries-old ceramic techniques used throughout France for food storage and preservation.
The handmade stoneware construction displays a honey-yellow glaze with natural aging characteristics including darkened rim edges and speckled surface variations typical of period ceramics. Visible potter's rings and organic imperfections authenticate its artisanal origins, while the cylindrical form features the classic rolled rim design standard to French preserve pot production. The thick stoneware walls provided excellent insulation for stored contents.
Measuring 12cm high (4.75 inches), this French jam pot exhibits good condition considering its century-plus age, with natural wear patterns consistent with authentic antique ceramics. Minor glaze variations and rim darkening reflect normal use over decades. The vessel could have occasionally stored duck confit or other preserved foods, though its primary function remained jam and fruit preserve storage.
This antique stoneware pot would enhance collections of French country pottery or serve as functional storage for modern pantry use.
