French Ironstone Plates

This pair of French ironstone plates originates from the Salins pottery works in eastern France, dating to the 19th century. These dinner plates represent quality ceramic production from the French provinces during a period of flourishing pottery manufacture.

The plates display the Guirlandes Louis XVI pattern, featuring delicate swag garlands rendered in teal green that form continuous decorative borders around the rim. This neoclassical motif reflects the influence of Louis XVI decorative arts, with symmetrical botanical elements characteristic of the style. The plates are crafted from sturdy ironstone with a warm cream-colored base that provides contrast to the green pattern work.

Each plate measures 24.3cm in diameter (9.5 inches), making them suitable for formal dining service. The reverse bears authentic Salins manufacturer marks, with stamps that may vary between pieces as was typical of period production. The ironstone construction shows the durability expected from this French pottery tradition, with the transferware decoration demonstrating the technical skills of 19th-century ceramic artisans.

These plates would complement collections of French ceramics or period table settings, representing the provincial pottery traditions that flourished throughout France during the 1800s.
