antique French copper pitcher
A hand-hammered antique French copper pitcher -- known in French households as a pichet en cuivre -- shaped in the classic bulbous farmhouse form that coppersmith workshops across rural France produced well into the nineteenth century. The body swells generously at the base, then curves inward to a waisted neck before flaring outward at a lipped rim, a silhouette that is both practical for pouring and quietly handsome on a shelf. The handle is cast brass, darkened and patinated with use, riveted to the body in the traditional manner.
What gives this antique French copper pitcher its warmth is the contrast between surfaces: the lower body carries a smooth, reflective finish that catches the light in rosy amber tones, while the upper neck bears the lively texture of hand-hammering -- small facets left deliberately by the coppersmith's planishing hammer, a mark of period hand construction rather than machine production. Inside, the copper has developed the deep brown and verdigris tones that accumulate over generations of honest use. A piece like this belongs equally on a kitchen shelf alongside French pottery, grouped with other metalware on a console, or planted with a single stem as a simple vase.
Condition and patina consistent with age. One visible dent to the lower body, shown clearly in the photos; light pitting and surface marks throughout are in keeping with the age and history of the piece.
Approx. 7.5 in wide x 6.7 in tall (19 x 17 cm).
