antique French grease pot

A pot a graisse -- a French grease or fat pot -- hand-thrown in stoneware and fired to a deep, earthy brown. Pieces like this were kept on farmhouse hearths and kitchen shelves across rural France well into the early twentieth century, used daily for storing rendered fat, confits or drippings. The form is quietly classic: a tall cylinder with a gently rolled lip and a subtly narrowing base, the kind of shape a village potter could throw efficiently and a household could use hard for decades.

The exterior wears its age openly -- bare, unglazed stoneware in a warm reddish brown, its surface dusted with the white mineral bloom that comes only from long storage in a cool cellar or larder. Inside, the original amber-brown glaze survives intact, its concentric throwing rings still clearly visible, evidence of wheel-thrown construction. Displayed on a kitchen shelf or a dining table, it holds wooden spoons with ease and brings an honest, rustic French farmhouse character to any room. It would be equally handsome on its own as a seasonal vase or a small plant holder.

Condition and patina consistent with age. There is one hairline fissure on the body, visible in the photographs; the interior glaze and the rim are otherwise sound, and the overall presence of the piece is strong.

Approx. 5.7 in wide x 7.5 in tall (14.5 x 19 cm).
