An antique French gilt mirror in the grand tradition of the Louis XV and Baroque styles that flourished across French interior decoration from the eighteenth century onward. The frame is wood and gesso, carved and gilded, with the sweeping outline -- slightly bowed at the corners -- that is the hallmark of the rococo boiserie aesthetic. The original antique frame has been fitted with a new glass, giving a fresh reflective surface inside the character of an aged surround.

The carving is the real draw here: each corner erupts into a composition of acanthus leaves, scrolling rocaille and shell-like forms, all bound together with the confident hand of a frame maker who knew this vocabulary well. Along the rails between the corners, a quieter pattern of foliate scrolls and a fine bead molding keep the eye moving. The gilding has mellowed to a warm amber-gold, with darker passages in the recesses that give the relief its depth and legibility. A mirror of this format -- compact enough for a console, a dressing table or a narrow hallway wall -- was a staple of French bourgeois interiors, often passed through generations precisely because the frame outlasted every fashion around it.

Condition and patina consistent with age. The gilded surface shows natural wear and some loss to the gesso ground in places, most visible along the flat rails; small drill holes are present at several corner positions, likely from earlier hanging hardware.

Overall frame: approx. 22.4 in wide x 26.6 in high (57 x 67.5 cm). Mirror glass: approx. 15.9 in wide x 19.1 in high (40.5 x 48.5 cm).
