French Enamel Pitcher

A classic French enamel pitcher -- known in France as a broc, the everyday water jug found in every provincial household from the Belle Epoque through the mid-twentieth century -- this piece is finished in crisp white enamel over steel with a deep cobalt blue rim that traces the spout, the base and the rolled edge of the handle. Its tall, gently tapering cylindrical form and high-swept spout are the defining marks of the French farmhouse style that American collectors and interior decorators have long sought out in the country's brocantes and vide-greniers.

The white enamel carries the warm, slightly uneven glow that only age produces, giving the surface far more life than any reproduction could manage. The elegant proportions -- wide at the base, narrowing gracefully toward the pouring lip -- make it equally at home holding dried botanicals on an open kitchen shelf, displaying a handful of wildflowers on a dining table, or standing alone as a study in quietly handsome utilitarian design. No maker's mark is legible in the photos.

Condition and patina consistent with age. The most notable characteristic is enamel loss and light surface rust at the upper handle attachment point, visible in photos 3 and 4; the body and interior enamel remain intact and clean.

Approx. 9.4 in tall (24 cm).
