Antique French Earthenware Octagonal Plate Yellow Glaze Terracotta 2910262

antique French earthenware octagonal plate

An antique French earthenware octagonal plate in hand-formed terracotta, covered in a warm amber yellow glaze that speaks to the long tradition of provincial French faience paysanne -- the everyday glazed pottery made for farmhouse tables across southern and central France from the eighteenth century onward. The octagonal form, assiette octogonale in French, was a practical and elegant shape common to rural workshops that lacked the resources of grand faience manufacturers but possessed real craft skill.

The interior glaze pools to a deep golden ochre at the well, lightening toward the rim, with a finely incised concentric ring separating the centre from the broad, flat flange. A dotted or beaded detail runs along the inner edge of the rim -- a hand-applied decorative touch that elevates this well above plain utility ware. The unglazed edges and exterior show the raw terracotta clay with grey kiln flashing, the natural result of wood-fired or saggar firing. The underside carries the marks of the kiln furniture and a cross-hatched release pattern at the foot, both consistent with period hand-finishing. A piece like this sits handsomely on a dresser shelf, used as a bread plate, or displayed as part of a French country ceramics collection.

Condition and patina consistent with age. There are small glaze losses at the centre well where use has worn the surface, and some light encrustation along the exterior rim edge; both lend the plate its honest, well-lived character.

Approx. 7.7 in diameter (19.6 cm).
