antique French earthenware bowl
A small antique French earthenware bowl, hand-formed from red terracotta clay and covered in a warm ochre yellow lead glaze that speaks to a long tradition of provincial French kitchen pottery. Pieces of this kind -- low, wide-mouthed and solidly practical -- were turned out by regional potteries across rural France from the eighteenth century well into the nineteenth, used daily for rillettes, salt, or small measures of grain. The unglazed terracotta foot and the honest way the glaze stops just above the base are hallmarks of this utilitarian tradition.
The form is compact and well-balanced: cylindrical walls that flare very slightly at the rim, a flat unglazed foot in brick-red clay, and an interior coated in the same golden ochre that warms the exterior. A ring of darker amber glaze runs along the lip, a detail that appears to be a deliberate decorative accent typical of country French potters. The overall surface carries the fine crazing and gentle mottling that come only with genuine age, giving the glaze a depth that a new piece simply cannot replicate. On a farmhouse shelf, a kitchen windowsill, or grouped with other antique French earthenware bowls, it holds its own quietly and with character.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Light glaze losses are visible along the base and at several points on the rim, and the crazing across the exterior is pronounced -- all of which are expected and desirable features of a well-used antique earthenware piece, not damage.
Approx. 4.5 in wide x 2.8 in high (11.5 x 7 cm).
