French Glass Demijohn

A large antique French glass demijohn of the type known in France as a dame jeanne, used historically for storing and transporting wine, cider, or other liquids in bulk. This French glass demijohn displays the classic teardrop silhouette associated with 19th and early 20th century French production, with a wide globular body tapering to a narrow cylindrical neck finished with a thick rolled collar lip.

The glass is a soft aqua-teal blue-green, characteristic of the iron content naturally present in period French glassmaking. The surface shows visible air bubbles and slight irregularities throughout the walls, consistent with hand-blown manufacture rather than industrial production. One small pontil-like inclusion is visible on the lower body. The base carries embossed markings including the letters "NS" and what appears to be "101" or a mold number, pressed into the glass during manufacture -- a useful detail for collectors researching French glasshouse production. The glass has a slightly smoky tint toward the base, transitioning to a clearer aqua toward the neck. Overall condition is good with age-appropriate surface cloudiness and minor internal residue typical of former use.
