French Glass Demijohn
A large antique French glass demijohn, known in France as a Dame Jeanne, of the type traditionally used for storing and transporting wine, cider, or other liquids in rural French households and farms. This French glass demijohn displays the characteristic hand-blown form associated with 19th and early 20th century French glassmaking, with clear evidence of individual craftsmanship throughout.
The body is blown in a pale sage-green glass with a natural aqua tint, typical of recycled or forest glass common to French production of this period. The surface shows the irregular texture and slight undulations inherent to hand-blown manufacture, with visible air bubbles trapped within the glass walls — a detail clearly shown in the close-up photo and consistent with authentic antique production rather than modern reproduction. The neck is narrow and elongated, finishing with a applied double-collar rim, also hand-finished. The overall form is globular and wide-bellied, tapering smoothly to the neck. Condition is good overall, consistent with age and prior use, with the surface patina and minor imperfections expected of an antique piece.
The demijohn measures approximately 21cm in diameter and 34cm in height (8.3" x 13.4"), as stated by the seller. This is a mid-sized example of the type, substantial in presence but manageable for display purposes.
As a decorative object, this French glass demijohn works well placed on a stone floor, in a kitchen, or alongside other vintage French farmhouse pieces. It is also sought by collectors of antique glassware and by wine or spirits enthusiasts interested in period storage vessels.
