French Glass Demijohn Bottle

A large French glass demijohn bottle of the type known in France as a dame jeanne, used historically for storing and transporting wine, cider, or spirits in rural households and on farms. This French glass demijohn bottle dates to the antique period and retains the classic hand-blown form associated with traditional French glassmaking.

The glass is a deep forest green, consistent with the iron-rich sand composition used in period French glass production. The body is wide and globular, narrowing into a tall cylindrical neck finished with an applied glass collar ring near the mouth. The opening itself shows a slightly irregular, fire-finished rim typical of hand-blown manufacture. Visible throughout the glass are natural imperfections including trapped air bubbles, surface striations, and slight asymmetry in the body -- all hallmarks of hand production rather than machine molding. The base photo reveals a pontil scar and what appears to be residual sediment in a swirling pattern, consistent with former wine or liquid storage. No mold seam is visible on the body, confirming free-blown construction. The exterior surface carries some weathering and residue consistent with age and use, but the glass is structurally intact with no visible cracks noted in the photos.

Dimensions as stated: approximately 21cm wide x 35cm tall / 8.3" wide x 13.8" tall. This is a substantial size for a decorative or collectible demijohn.
