French Glass Demijohn

A large French glass demijohn of the type known in France as a Dame Jeanne, this hand-blown vessel was produced for storing and transporting wine or other liquids, a common practice in French rural and agricultural settings from the 19th into the early 20th century. The French glass demijohn form remained largely unchanged across generations, making precise dating challenging without additional marks, though the hand-finished lip and bubble inclusions in the glass point to earlier manufacture.

The body is blown in a deep amber, ochre-tinted glass with a warm golden tone visible when light passes through. The globular form tapers sharply toward a narrow cylindrical neck, finishing with a hand-applied collar ring at the lip. Close-up photography of the neck reveals an uneven, slightly scalloped rim edge consistent with free-blown glasswork rather than machine production. Large air bubbles are clearly visible on the shoulder and lower body, a characteristic of mouth-blown glass and evidence of hand craftsmanship. The surface shows minor dirt residue noted by the seller as not yet fully cleaned, and there are no chips, cracks or structural damage visible in the photos.

The seller notes dimensions of 24cm x 35cm (9.4" wide x 13.8" tall). This places the bottle in the mid-size demijohn range, substantial enough for display but manageable in weight when empty.

A French glass demijohn of this amber tone works well as a standalone decorative object on a sideboard, shelf or floor, particularly in interiors with natural materials. It is also sought by collectors of antique French glassware and by home fermentation enthusiasts who appreciate period vessels.
