Antique French Copper Measuring Jug Pitcher Farmhouse Kitchen 1010263

antique French copper measuring jug

A classic antique French copper measuring jug of the kind that stood on the stone counters of French farmhouse kitchens for generations, used daily to portion out liquids with a precision the French took seriously long before metric standardization. Hand-seamed from sheet copper and joined with solder at the neck and base ring, the jug follows the familiar bonne mesure form -- a wide, flared foot that widens slightly toward the base, a tapering waist, and a tall angled spout that pours cleanly. The loop handle is fashioned from a rolled copper rod, riveted firmly at top and bottom.

The exterior carries a warm, burnished copper tone that deepens to amber at the seams, evidence of honest age rather than any artificial treatment. The interior retains its original tin lining, now darkened with use, as was standard practice for copper vessels intended for liquids. Pieces like this were produced by regional chaudronniers -- itinerant coppersmiths -- and are a well-documented part of French rural material culture from the nineteenth century onward. On a kitchen shelf, a farmhouse table or grouped with other antique metalware, it reads as quietly handsome and genuinely lived-in.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light darkening at the seams and some surface wear to the tin lining visible from the top; the copper body is sound and the handle is firmly attached. a kind of bump on a side please check photos
