Antique French Confit Pot Green Glazed

A traditional antique French confit pot green glazed in terracotta, of the type produced in rural French workshops during the late 19th to early 20th century. These double-handled storage vessels were standard kitchen equipment in French farmhouses, used to preserve duck or goose confit under a layer of fat, and occasionally for other preserved foods. The form is consistent with southern French provincial pottery production.

The upper body carries a rich, mottled green lead glaze applied over the shoulder and neck, stopping roughly halfway down the vessel where the natural terracotta clay is left exposed. The glaze surface shows characteristic crazing, uneven pooling and areas where the glaze has thinned to reveal the buff-toned slip beneath, all consistent with period hand-application techniques and wood-fired kiln firing. Two small loop handles are positioned symmetrically at the shoulder, both fully intact and glazed. The lower half and footed base retain the raw, unglazed terracotta in a warm reddish-brown tone with natural firing marks and surface grime from age and use. The interior is partially glazed, showing wheel-thrown ridges and accumulated patina. No maker's mark or stamp is visible in the photos. Wear and minor surface losses to the glaze are present, consistent with genuine age and working use.

The pot measures approximately 23cm tall (approximately 9.1 inches). Width across the handles is estimated at approximately 20cm (7.9 inches) based on the seller's stated height and proportions visible in the photos.

A piece of this type works well as a standalone display object on a shelf, console or kitchen surface, and is sought after by collectors of French country pottery and provincial faience. The two-handle form and the two-tone glazed and unglazed finish are characteristic features that attract buyers interested in authentic rural French ceramics.
