French tureen
This antique French tureen represents fine 19th-century earthenware craftsmanship from the renowned Vieillard pottery works in Bordeaux. The piece exemplifies the classic Terre de Fer production that established Vieillard's reputation among French ceramic manufacturers of the period.
The white glazed ceramic displays the characteristic lustrous finish typical of quality French institutional pottery. Two gracefully curved handles provide practical grip while maintaining the vessel's balanced proportions. The footed pedestal base elevates the bowl form, creating the classical silhouette associated with traditional French serving pieces. The smooth surface shows the fine ceramic body beneath the clear glaze.
Measuring 23.5cm x 15cm / 9.25" x 5.9" without handles, this substantial tureen demonstrates good condition with period-appropriate crazing visible in the glaze. The ceramic surface retains its original clarity, and the handles show proper attachment to the main body. Minor manufacturing variations in the glaze add authenticity to this French tureen from the Vieillard workshops.
This functional serving vessel would complement collections of French ceramics or antique tableware. The neutral white finish adapts well to various table settings while maintaining its historical significance as an example of 19th-century French pottery production.
