French Cast Iron Street Sign
Cast directly from iron and mounted on a French street wall, this antique French cast iron street sign reads "Rue Louis Dornier" in raised serif lettering across two lines. Street plaques of this type were produced for French municipalities from the mid-19th century onward, and this example carries all the hallmarks of that era: a heavy, solid iron plate with a raised rectangular border and four corner mounting holes, two of which retain remnants of the original iron bolts.
The surface shows an aged grey-brown paint layer, heavily worn and scratched from decades of outdoor exposure. Patches of underlying paint layers in white and traces of other pigments are visible across the face, along with areas of surface rust near the mounting points. The raised lettering is rendered in a classic bold serif font, consistent with late 19th to early 20th century French municipal typography. No maker's mark or foundry stamp is visible in the photos. The overall patina is consistent with genuine age and extended outdoor use.
The sign measures 46cm x 30.5cm / 18.1" x 12". It is a substantial, heavy piece, as expected from solid cast iron construction of this period. The weight and thickness are clearly visible in the side-profile photograph.
A French cast iron street sign of this type appeals to collectors of French architectural salvage, industrial antiques, and Francophile decorators. It works well displayed flat on a shelf, mounted on a wall, or used as a prop in a French-themed interior. The name "Louis Dornier" may reference a local notable, making it of potential interest to regional historians and genealogists as well.
