Antique French Cast Iron Garden Urn
Cast in iron and finished on a square stepped pedestal, this antique French cast iron garden urn belongs to a long tradition of decorative foundry work that supplied the parks, terraces and potagers of France from the mid-nineteenth century onward. The form is the classic coupe de jardin, a wide, shallow bowl set on a turned baluster stem, a silhouette that remains as pleasing on a mantelpiece or library shelf today as it once was on a chateau gravel path.
The bowl and pedestal carry delicate relief ornament throughout: an egg-and-dart border runs along the rim, acanthus leaves wrap the lower body, and a radiating shell pattern covers the underside of the bowl, all clearly visible in the photos. The two lateral handles are cast separately and fitted flush to the rim, each one terminating in a tight volute with finely scrolled acanthus foliage below. The overall color is a deep charcoal-blue layered over warm rust brown where the original paint has worn through, giving the piece a handsome, well-balanced aged surface. It would sit naturally on a console, a windowsill, filled with dried botanicals, or used as a small centerpiece bowl.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Surface shows areas of natural rust and paint loss across the body and base, as clearly seen in the photos; the interior bowl has surface rust throughout. No cracks or structural losses noted.
The seller notes this piece as a piedouche form. Approx. 9.6 in wide x 6.9 in high (24.5 x 17.5 cm); width at widest including handles approx. 14.6 in (37 cm).
