Antique French Bread Slicer
An antique French bread slicer -- couteau a pain a bascule in French -- dating to the early twentieth century, most likely from the 1900s to 1920s. The heavy cast iron blade pivots on a cast iron arch bracket mounted at one end of a solid dark-stained wooden base, allowing the blade to rock downward in a guillotine-style motion through a loaf placed beneath it. The wooden base rests on small carved feet and carries a green-painted metal channel along its length that guides the blade. This type of fitted mechanical slicer was standard in French households and small boulangeries during that period and reads clearly as a rustic farmhouse kitchen object.
The cast iron blade is broad and slightly curved, tapering from a thick spine toward a sharpened lower edge. On the flat face of the blade, an oval maker's stamp is clearly visible; the initials SP appear at its centre with partial surrounding text that is partially legible in the photos. A second abbreviated mark, appearing to read S and a second letter, is stamped on the green metal channel strip on the underside of the base. The turned wooden handle is dark walnut or a similarly close-grained hardwood. The green-painted steel guide channel is riveted to the top surface of the wooden base with visible period rivets. The cast iron arch bracket at the pivot end retains its original hardware bolt.
The cast iron blade shows significant surface oxidation and mottled grey patina consistent with age and storage; no active flaking but the surface is rough and uneven throughout. The wooden base has minor scuffs, surface scratches and light soiling on the feet and corners. The green-painted metal channel retains most of its original paint with localised loss at the edges. No cracks, breaks or replaced structural parts are visible. All components appear original. Sold as pictured.
Dimensions: 16.1 x 9.6 x 12 in (41 x 24.5 x 30.5 cm). The antique French bread slicer functions mechanically as a table-mounted bread cutter, though given its age, condition and unverified blade sharpness, it is best suited to display as a farmhouse kitchen collectible or prop. It is sold as a decorative collectible and has not been tested for food use.
