Antique French Bread Board
A generously sized antique French bread board in solid patinated wood, its most telling feature a beautifully hand-cut double-arch silhouette where the handle meets the body -- a form that was common in French provincial kitchens from the late nineteenth century through the early twentieth, when la planche a pain was an everyday fixture on the farmhouse table. The board is made of a single thick plank, the handle pierced with a small nail hole for hanging.
Decades of daily use have deepened the wood to a warm, layered honey-brown, darker at the edges and handle where hands gripped it most. The surface carries the gentle undulation of an object that has lived and worked, with faint knife traces across the face that speak to authentic provenance. Propped against a kitchen wall, displayed on a shelf among pottery and linens, or laid flat as a serving board for cheese and charcuterie, this antique French bread board brings immediate warmth and graphic character to a room.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The board has a slight twist along its length, visible when viewed from the side, and light surface wear throughout -- all part of its honest, well-earned character.
Approx. 13.0 in wide x 19.1 in tall x 1.0 in thick (33 x 48.5 x 2.5 cm).
