French Bottle Drying Rack

A French bottle drying rack of the type widely used in French wine-producing households, bistros and small-scale breweries from the late 19th to early 20th century. This French bottle drying rack was a practical workshop tool, designed to hold bottles inverted for draining and air-drying after washing. Pieces of this age and construction are increasingly sought after by collectors of French industrial antiques and farmhouse objects.

The rack is constructed from hand-worked wrought iron, formed into three circular tiers supported by a central vertical spine and connected by flat iron bands, riveted at each junction. The upward-pointing iron pegs, arranged in clusters around each tier, are forged in a typical French manner seen on racks produced for regional wine and cider production. The surface retains its original dark patina with traces of blue-black paint still visible on the central column and several bands, along with areas of rust consistent with age and use. No maker's mark or stamp is visible in the photos. The riveted construction and hand-forged quality of the pegs point to artisanal manufacture rather than industrial mass production.

The rack measures approximately 39.5cm tall x 31cm wide, which converts to roughly 15.6" x 12.2". These proportions are typical of a mid-capacity rack designed to hold between 16 and 20 standard wine or cider bottles simultaneously across its three tiers.

Widely displayed today as a decorative object in kitchens, dining rooms and industrial-style interiors, this type of rack also functions practically as a wine bottle holder or utensil organizer. French bottle drying racks of comparable age and condition are regularly collected as examples of French vernacular ironwork.
