Pieces of this type were produced in significant numbers by French faience and earthenware workshops throughout the mid-twentieth century, prized for their even heat distribution and honest, unpretentious form.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe dish is pleasingly well balanced: its low, straight sides and broadly oval footprint make it as handsome displayed on an open kitchen shelf as it is practical for oven use. The interior glaze is smooth and richly colored, catching the light with a gentle sheen. The exterior walls are left in the natural bisque-orange of the clay, lightly speckled, which gives the piece its characteristic rustic character.
