The front face presents a sun-warmed open terrain with a group of tall, wind-leaning Scots pines anchoring the composition, rocky outcroppings glowing in amber and sienna to the right, and a hazy blue mountain range receding into the distance. The palette -- clear cobalt sky, warm ochre earth, dark conifer foliage -- is entirely characteristic of the post-war French landscape tradition, when painters regularly headed into the garrigue or the foothills of the Massif Central with a portable pochade box under one arm.

The brushwork throughout is lively and assured, with thick, directional strokes that build real texture in the rock faces and canopy. A small signature is legible in the lower left corner, though it reads as initials only and has not been fully deciphered. Notably, the reverse side of the board carries a second, entirely different landscape -- a brooding moorland scene in violet, orange and green -- suggesting the board was used on both sides as a working study support. Two small iron hanging rings are already in place along the sides, ready to accept a picture wire. This kind of double-sided pochade board is a charming survivor of the French atelier habit of economising on supports while never economising on ambition. It would be equally at home hung in a study, a library or a French country sitting room.

Condition and patina consistent with age. The board edges show light wear and some surface scuffing at the corners; the paint surface on the front is stable and well-preserved, with the impasto texture fully intact.

Approx. 24.0 in wide x 18.3 in high (61 x 46.5 cm), unframed.

95% of my items are tariff-free to the US.
