The maker's mark is clearly visible on the base, printed in dark blue in the characteristic crosshatched script style associated with the Luneville pottery works, active from 1731 and particularly prolific during the Aesthetic Movement period of the 1870s to 1890s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe piece is earthenware, glazed in a warm off-white cream ground. The decoration is transfer-printed in slate blue-grey and depicts a naturalistic composition of birds perched among flowering branches, trailing botanical sprigs, and dragonflies in flight -- motifs strongly influenced by the Japonisme aesthetic that was fashionable in French ceramics during this period. The same floral sprig motif continues on the pedestal base. The underside of the dish also carries smaller botanical transfer prints. The glaze is glossy throughout.
