Wheel-thrown from red earthenware clay and fired to a warm, rounded body, this piece belongs to a long lineage of French country pottery produced in the workshops of southern and southwestern France, where the orgeole served as an everyday workhorse of rural domestic life.

The generous bulbous body narrows to a short cylindrical neck and opens to a wide, lipped mouth, flanked by two very different handles: one is a classic rounded loop on one side, and on the other a flat, angular spout-like bracket that doubles as a pouring aid. The all-over amber-ochre glaze -- a deep, translucent tone that pools and drips slightly at the joints -- is applied inside and out, and the interior shows the characteristic throwing rings of hand production. Small dark inclusions in the clay body show through the glaze here and there, giving the surface real character and confirming its age. Equally at home displayed on an open kitchen shelf, used as a vase for dried grasses, or placed on a farmhouse table as a decorative centerpiece.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light surface pitting and minor glaze irregularities visible across the body, typical of period earthenware production; these are features of the making, not damage.

Approx. 10.6 in wide x 10.6 in tall (27 x 27 cm).

95% of my items are tariff-free to the US.
