The cylindrical form is straightforward and honest, with a slightly raised collar rim that would have received a wax-paper or cloth cover tied with twine.

The glaze settles into a soft ochre tone on the body, deepening where it pools and thins at the edges to reveal the brick-red clay beneath -- exactly the unpretentious character that makes these country crocks so appealing in an American kitchen or on a shelf alongside other French brocante finds. The unglazed foot and base show the telltale wheel marks and coarse clay texture of hand-production. There are no legible marks on the base. On the windowsill, a potting bench or a kitchen counter, it holds its own as a pencil cup, a small planter or simply as an object of rustic daily life.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light glaze loss and chipping along the lower edge of the base, and some surface wear to the interior, both visible in the photos and entirely in keeping with a well-used antique pot.

Approx. 4.7 in tall (12 cm).

95% of my items are tariff-free to the US.
