Boria Caltagirone", this Italian Caltagirone reticulated ceramic basket is a classic expression of the hand-painted earthenware tradition that has defined the hilltop town of Caltagirone in Sicily for centuries. Wheel-thrown and hand-formed in local terracotta, then glazed in an opaque cream ground and painted in a deep cobalt blue with accents of soft rose, it belongs to a long lineage of decorative and useful wares that traveled from Sicily across the Mediterranean to French and European tables.

The broad oval well is filled with a flowing arabesque of stylized lilies, scrolling acanthus and curling stems painted with the confident, slightly loose brushwork characteristic of Caltagirone artisans working by hand. The raised border transitions to an open pierced lattice -- each diamond neatly cut through the clay before firing -- framed by four baroque cartouches painted with a crosshatch tile motif and surrounded by a ruffled, shell-edged rim. Two lateral scroll handles complete the form. The glaze crazing visible on the back, the warm terracotta exposed at the foot rim and the hand-lettered maker mark all confirm a handmade piece rather than an industrial reproduction. Set on a sideboard, a kitchen shelf or a dining table as a bread or fruit basket, it brings warmth and graphic pattern to a room without effort.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light crazing throughout the glaze, most visible on the undecorated base, and minor surface wear on the rim consistent with careful use over time.

Approx. 14.0 in x 11.2 in (35.5 x 28.5 cm).

95% of my items are tariff-free to the US.
