The frame itself is carved wood, stained to a deep walnut tone, with an oval rope-twist border and a tall decorative crest at the top featuring acanthus scrolls, curling volutes and layered leaf forms typical of late Napoleon III and early Third Republic decorative craft. A convex glass dome protects the portrait, lending the whole piece that characteristic rounded, jewel-like presence found in the finest French bourgeois interiors of the period.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat makes this piece appealing is precisely the unity of frame and image: the portrait has never been removed, and the pairing of the handsome carved surround with the soft, vignetted studio photograph gives the object a quiet, collected authority.
